Odd Coincidence
Having just spent some time reading about the Christian church's history of violence, it was disconcerting to hear about Pope Benedict's recent speech. While I do not approve of anyone gaining converts by force or the threat of force, it was ironic that he should single out Islam given the historic record.
Perhaps this incident will in some roundabout way create the basis of a fruitful dialogue. But if Christians remain in denial of their own history, we can hardly complain when Muslims condemn us for hypocrisy.

Maybe there needs to be a "Geneva Convention" for religions. First item, coercion of any sort for recruitment is forbidden. Next, no punishments for those who leave your religion. Third, members must have access to information about other religions. Many more come to mind. Any religion that fails to abide by the convention would be boycotted by civilized society and not given rights to broadcast their message or otherwise participate in society.
(sigh)....I myself find the way we distort the almighty and limit his abilties as the ultimate tragedy. There is violence in every religion, abuse in every church, whether physical, mental or emotional. How sad.
